Feds knocking on doors to question voters’ immigration status: CBS
I think the most telling detail here is that nobody knows quite how wide this effort reaches, and that uncertainty is what makes it feel dangerous. Federal agents knocking on doors and asking about immigration status in the context of voting is a direct way to put a chill on turnout in immigrant communities, and you don't have to be a cynic to read it as more about optics than law enforcement.
At the same time, I'm not going to pretend non-citizen voting is a non-issue. Election integrity matters, and states spent years debating voter ID laws on that exact premise. The difference is process. A dry, rules-based check of registration rolls against citizenship databases is one thing. Showing up at someone's front door with a badge is another, and the burden should be on the administration to explain what concrete evidence justifies that level of intrusion.
The raw note argues the administration should rely on policy and persuasion rather than tactics that make people afraid. I think that's roughly right, but I'd want to know what the actual findings are before landing hard. If agents turn up evidence of widespread fraud, the story shifts. If they turn up nothing, the case for this gets much harder to defend. Right now the administration owes voters a plain accounting of what the knocking has produced.
