Trump says he called Google’s CEO to rename the Atlantic Ocean
The Atlantic Ocean nearly got a new name, and we have only the president's word that it was ever on the table. Trump says he asked Sundar Pichai to do it, Pichai said no, and that's that. But the request itself is worth a pause. A sitting president asking a tech CEO to change the name of an ocean on a map app is a strange mix of power and powerlessness.
On one hand, it's easy to laugh off as another rally riff. On the other, it shows how much authority we've handed to platforms like Google Maps. When the president wants a geographic name changed, he doesn't go through a government body or international agreement. He calls a private executive. That's a telling detail about who gets to decide what we call the world.
I'd want to know more about the other name changes Trump praised, and whether Google has any policy for handling requests from world leaders. Pichai's refusal suggests there's a line, but it's a corporate line, not a constitutional one. That may be fine, but it's worth watching when these conversations go beyond oceans.
