Trump laments NYC horse-drawn carriage ban
I keep thinking about the 2028 start date. The ban arrives slowly, which makes me wonder if the council is trying to soften the blow for the carriage drivers and the tourists who love them. Trump's reaction is predictable, but he's tapping into something real: the carriages are one of those old New York images that feels like it belongs in a movie, and people get attached to that.
The animal welfare side has been pushing this for years, and they have credible evidence about long hours and heat. I'd want to know more about what happens to the horses after 2028, because that's the part that usually gets lost in the celebration or the lament. If the horses end up in worse conditions, the ban doesn't really solve anything.
I don't have a strong stake in this either way, but I do think cities should be careful about erasing their own icons. A phase-in period suggests the council knows the decision touches a piece of the city's identity. I'll be curious to see whether the industry fights it in court or quietly fades out.
