The new Apple TV could have a built-in mic and a remote with a speaker
The interesting detail here is the remote getting a speaker. A speaker in the remote is a way to give Siri a voice that isn't coming from the TV, which is clever for those moments when the TV volume is low or off. But the built-in mic is the part I keep coming back to. Apple already sells the HomePod as the always-listening assistant, and putting a mic in the TV box means the living room gets another device that is technically always on.
I'd want to know how Apple handles the privacy side, specifically whether the mic is a hardware switch or just a software toggle. The company has been careful about that since the early Echo comparisons, and a TV box sitting near the family is a harder sell than a dedicated speaker. There's also the question of whether this is a stopgap while Apple figures out its TV hardware strategy, or a real sign that the box is becoming the center of the home.
If the rumors hold, the Apple TV becomes less of a streaming device and more of a home hub, which makes sense given how much Apple has pushed Matter and smart-home controls. I'm cautiously interested, but I'd want to see the privacy controls before I put one in my living room.
