Tillis says Miller, Hegseth, RFK Jr. should be fired
Tillis is on his way out the door and he's not bothering to soften the landing. Calling for the firing of Miller, Hegseth, and RFK Jr. on a sports talk show is about as public as a GOP lawmaker can get with an intra-party fight. The "present no cost-benefit" phrasing is telling, because it frames these picks as a management problem, not a policy disagreement.
What makes this worth watching is that Tillis isn't some backbench gadfly. He's a sitting Republican senator from a state that went for Trump twice, and he's choosing his final months in office to pick fights with the administration's most loyal figures. That suggests either genuine conviction or a post-retirement career plan that doesn't depend on Trump's goodwill.
I'd want to know whether other retiring Republicans share his view privately. Tillis might be the only one willing to say it out loud, but the odds he's alone in his thinking seem slim. Either way, it's a reminder that the Republican coalition has real fault lines even when the president's approval numbers look solid.
