Scott Colom releases ‘Sinners’-themed campaign ad as Mississippi Senate race heats up
There's something fitting about a Mississippi candidate leaning into a set-in-the-Delta Halloween movie reference in the final days of a race. Colom clearly wants to show he knows the cultural terrain of his home state, and TikTok is a smart move for reaching younger voters who aren't getting their news from cable. But an homage only works if people actually get the reference, and that's the bet. The movie's 1932 setting, its themes of twins and identity, those could resonate with a message about choices and consequences. Or they could wash right over swing voters who just want to hear about the issues.
I'd be curious to know what the broader campaign strategy looks like here. A single ad is a gesture, not a platform. Mississippi's Senate race has real stakes around healthcare, infrastructure, and rural economic policy, and I don't hear much about those in a Halloween-themed TikTok. If Colom follows this with concrete issue messaging, it's a clever warmup. If not, it might feel like style over substance.
Either way, it's refreshing to see a campaign try something locally grounded instead of recycling the same national talking points. Voters can smell formula from a mile away, and this at least smells like Mississippi.
