Tim Scott calls for DOJ investigation of Peltola campaign
The timing here is worth noting. Scott, a senator from South Carolina, is calling for a federal investigation into a House race in Alaska a week before the election. That's a big ask, and it lands in a state where ranked-choice voting was supposed to make the spoiler game harder to play. Peltola has won this seat before as a Democrat in a red-leaning state, so the margin matters.
I don't doubt that campaigns try to influence who runs against them. That's as old as politics. But there's a real difference between encouraging a candidate to file and coordinating with them in ways that break campaign finance or election law. The reports need to show which one happened here. If the Peltola campaign crossed a line into active coordination, that's a problem. If it's just voters or allies floating a name, that's a different story.
I'd want to see the underlying evidence before passing judgment. A DOJ investigation this close to an election is a heavy hammer, and it can cut both ways. If nothing comes of it, Scott has handed Peltola's side a grievance to rally around. If something real surfaces, then it's a legitimate concern. Either way, Alaska voters go to the polls next week, and this late-game maneuvering is part of the noise they have to sort through.
