Bessent alleges anti-fraud guardrails are ‘loosest’ in blue states
Bessent picked Minnesota for a reason. It's the state where the healthcare fraud indictments landed, so his claim has a handy local example. But calling the guardrails the "loosest" in blue states is a sweeping charge that outruns what we know so far. The DOJ indicted more than a dozen people in Minnesota this year, which is real. Whether that makes the state's oversight the worst in the country, or just the most recently exposed, is a different question.
I think the honest read here is that fraud prevention is often weakest where programs are biggest and most complex, and that cuts across party lines. Bessent's framing turns a management problem into a red-blue scoreboard. I'd want to see the actual audit data, the recovery rates, the claims denial numbers, before I'd accept that blue states are uniquely sloppy. What we have right now is one scandal and a political line, and those aren't the same thing.
