The Yandex outage probably didn’t blitz Russian bots
The Cloudflare chart showing a dramatic cliff in traffic right when the drones hit is easy to read as proof that Russian bot armies got blitzed. But the bots that disappeared are probably the boring kind. Health checks, search crawlers, API pings from services hosted in those data centers. The stuff that keeps the internet running quietly, not the troll-farm variety that floods timelines with propaganda.
I think the more interesting angle is what this reveals about how physical damage shows up in internet metrics. When a data center goes dark, every automated service on it vanishes at once, and that leaves a visible scar in traffic data. That's genuinely useful for tracking the war's effects, even if it's not the dramatic botnet collapse the headlines suggest.
What I'd want to know next is what those bots actually were. Cloudflare's numbers can't tell you intent. If Yandex hosts a big chunk of Russia's cloud plumbing, this outage is a story about infrastructure fragility and concentration risk, not about information warfare. The distinction changes how seriously we should take the chart.
