Water access becomes a top election concern for Arizona voters
Water is the one thing we can't negotiate with. You can argue about tax rates or border policy, but when the tap runs dry, the conversation ends. Arizona voters ranking this above the usual hot-button issues tells me something fundamental is shifting in how we think about survival versus ideology.
What fascinates me is the timing. The drought has been building for decades, and it's only now breaking through as a top-tier political concern. I'd want to know what specific solutions candidates are proposing, because "secure our water future" can mean anything from desalination to cutting agricultural use to wilder ideas. The Colorado River is over-allocated, and someone's going to have to give something up.
I think we're seeing the beginning of a new political category. Climate isn't abstract anymore when it affects your drinking water. Arizona might be the test case for how democracy handles resource scarcity, and I'm not sure we're ready for the answers.
