Hochul says Trump rallies are ‘poisoning’ Nicki Minaj’s mind
I think Hochul's choice of words is doing a lot of work here. Calling Trump rallies "poisoning" goes beyond a measured critique of policy differences. It reads as a diagnosis of someone's mental state. That's a pretty personal attack on a pop star, and it frames political disagreement as a kind of illness. Whether you agree with Minaj's politics or not, that framing tends to push people further into their corners rather than open any dialogue.
The "get offline" part is interesting too. Hochul is treating Minaj's views as the product of too much internet and too many rallies, which is a common way politicians dismiss voters they don't reach. But it also sidesteps the possibility that Minaj actually holds these views on her own.
I'd want to know what Minaj posted that set this off. Without that context, the governor's response reads as reactive and a little condescending. And honestly, when a governor spends time scolding a rapper, it tends to give the rapper more attention, not less. That might be the real miscalculation here.
