After Starshield interruption, Ukraine wants to build its own satellite communication network with ICEYE and Nokia
I keep coming back to how quickly the ground shifted under Ukraine's comms. Watching Starshield get yanked mid-operation must have felt like a hand pressing down on a light switch in the middle of a battlefield. The move toward ICEYE and Nokia is less about replacing hardware than about rewriting the terms of dependency. No one in this fight can afford to have their networks held hostage by corporate whims or geopolitical mood swings.
This is where the story gets interesting beyond the tactical level. Sovereign satellite systems mean Ukraine is playing the long game, building infrastructure that outlasts the current conflict. ICEYE's radar imaging is proven in this theater, and Nokia brings the terrestrial backbone. I'd want to know what the actual constellation footprint would look like, and how they'd fund it. The letter of intent is a promising marker but the orbit graveyard is full of good intentions.
I think what matters most here is the template it sets. If Ukraine can pull this off, they will have demonstrated a model for other nations that suddenly realize their comms run through foreign-owned relays.
