Val Chmerkovskiy Ousted From Next ‘DWTS’ Episode Amid Will Smith Oscars Slap Reference, Jenna Dewan to Dance With Alan Bersten
I think the real story here isn't what Val posted, but how quickly a joke lands you in the penalty box. We're all one poorly timed reference away from a public scolding these days, and the dance show is no exception. What I'd want to know is whether the post was a playful wink or something more pointed, because that changes everything about whether this punishment feels fair.
The show's statement treats the matter as an open-and-shut case, but I suspect there's a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiation happening right now. Pairing Jenna Dewan with Alan Bersten was probably the smoothest logistical fix, but it also sends a message that the production can adapt on a dime. In a world where every performer curates a public image, the line between the person and the persona has gotten very thin. I'm left wondering if DWTS is setting a precedent here that will make future contestants extra cautious, or if this is just a storm that'll blow over by the next episode.
