Apple’s HomeView has an app problem
The HomeView's whole pitch crumbles if apps don't show up. The hardware is there, the power is there, it sits in a permanent spot in the living room, and yet the story so far is about a device with no clear answer to the most obvious question: what can I actually run on it. Apple has been notoriously quiet about app support for this kind of display, and that silence is doing the heavy lifting in this story.
I think the tension is that this is the cheapest way to get an always-on Apple compute surface into a home, but a locked-down one. If Apple ships it with a curated set of smart home controls and a few widgets, it becomes an expensive doorbell monitor. If they open it to the full App Store, they risk a cluttered mess that nobody asked for. Both paths are risky.
What I'd want to know next is how the developer story actually works. Is there a separate HomeView App Store, or do existing iPad apps just run in a compatible mode? The answer probably determines whether this is a niche accessory or a real platform. For now I'm leaning mildly skeptical, but the hardware specs make it a harder call than it first looks.
