Look: Estate sale purchase turns out to be box of live WWII grenades
Somewhere in Texas, somebody paid actual money for a box of live grenades and probably thought they were getting a bargain. That's the thing about estate sales, you're buying a stranger's whole life in Tupperware and old lamps, and every once in a while that life includes unexploded ordnance from a world war. I'd love to know what the shopper thought they were buying. Maybe a toolbox, maybe a cookie tin, maybe they just saw the word "grenades" and figured it was a replica set for the man cave.
The police showing up makes sense, but I'm more interested in the person who kept these things for eighty years. Did grandpa bring them home from the war and just stash them in the garage? Did the family know? You can't exactly put that in the estate sale listing. "Vintage military collectibles, do not squeeze."
I think the takeaway is that estate sales are a gamble, and this shopper lost the bet in the most dramatic way possible. Nobody got hurt, the bomb squad handled it, and now someone has a story that beats every antique roadshow anecdote you've ever heard. I just wonder how long it took them to stop checking every other box in the house for surprises.
