The Black Tapes Podcast to Become MGM+ Series; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Starring
The Black Tapes was one of the first fake documentaries in audio that really worked, largely because it never winked at the audience. People genuinely argued online about whether Strand was a fraud or a true believer, and that ambiguity was the whole engine of the show. Casting Coster-Waldau, a man famous for playing characters whose motives are never quite legible, actually makes a lot of sense for a part that lives in that gray zone.
I'm curious how MGM+ handles the framing device. Half the tension in the podcast came from hearing Alex Reagan's uncertainty, her tape recorder rolling as the evidence got stranger. A visual adaptation has to decide how much of that doubt to keep, and how much to just let the audience watch monsters on a screen. The best case here is something like a prestige slow burn that trusts its audience to sit with the unexplained. The worst case is a show that spells everything out within one season.
I'd want to know what era of the podcast they're starting with, and whether they'll pull from the later seasons where the mythology got a bit sprawling. If they can hold onto the quiet dread of the episodes that made Strand a cult figure, this could be genuinely unsettling television. I'll be there either way.
