Scott Wiener prevails in race to succeed retiring Pelosi
Scott Wiener pulling off a win in Nancy Pelosi's old seat is a real generational shift for San Francisco, and the question now is what he does with all that inherited clout. Two progressives ran, but they pitched different versions of the city, with Chan leaning on the activist playbook and Wiener leaning into his housing and transit record in Sacramento. Voters picked the latter, and that tells you which way the neighborhood winds are blowing.
I'd want to see the precinct-level numbers, because San Francisco's political math has been shifting for a decade. Pelosi's exit from the House after all those years closes a chapter, and her successor gets an outsize microphone whether he wants it or not. Wiener knows how to move bills in the state Senate, but playing in a national arena is a different game.
Chan conceding before the official call is its own tell. The race was hardly a toss-up, so the real story may be turnout, and whether either campaign actually moved ordinary voters or just shored up the base.
