Treasury Department says Iran’s economy cratering, inflation at 90 percent
Ninety percent inflation means ordinary Iranians are watching prices roughly double in a year. That's the part of this story that lands hardest, even before you get to the politics of it. The Treasury report says the pressure campaign is working, and on its own terms it seems to be.
Campaigns like Operation Economic Outcast tend to get described in Washington as leverage, but the human cost is the part that rarely makes the briefing. I'd want to know what the administration considers a successful end state. Sanctions can squeeze an economy without loosening a government's grip, and history offers plenty of examples where the squeeze hardened the regime instead.
I'm not arguing the pressure should end. I'm noting that a report counting inflation toward victory leaves out the question of what comes after. That's the gap I'd like someone to answer.
