Binance recovers 90 percent of stolen assets from hack
Ninety percent recovered sounds like a win, but the remaining ten percent of a $6.3 billion theft is still a lot of money. Binance moved quickly to suspend deposits and withdrawals, and other crypto firms helped by freezing around $3 billion in assets. That coordination probably made the recovery possible, and it shows how much the industry can do when it works together.
At the same time, the episode raises questions about how safe customer funds really are on centralized exchanges. If a platform can halt withdrawals for days, users are dependent on the company's decisions and on other firms' willingness to cooperate. The fact that billions could be frozen by outside companies is reassuring in one way, but it also reminds me how far crypto still is from the self-custody ideal many supporters talk about.
I'd want to know how the attackers got in and whether the remaining ten percent is still being tracked. The headline is good news, but the details matter.
