John Coale is exactly who we need to bring home our Americans
I have to admit, the transactional approach has a certain appeal when families are waiting years for news of a loved one held overseas. Coale's backers say he has actually gotten people out, which is more than some formal diplomatic efforts can claim. That counts for a lot to the people directly affected.
At the same time, I'd want to hear more about the costs of that approach. Paying ransoms or making concessions can set a precedent that makes Americans more valuable targets. The Senate confirmation process is the right place to force that conversation into the open, and it shouldn't rush just because the politics feel urgent.
I'm not convinced either way yet. The evidence for Coale's effectiveness is real, but the long-term consequences deserve as much attention as the short-term wins. I'd like to see specifics on what deals he has made and what they cost before he gets this kind of authority.
