There’s a Free Video Editor Inside Google Drive That Anyone Can Use
Google Vids is a free, web-based video editor tucked inside Google Drive that most users never notice. It lets anyone assemble slideshow-style videos with stock footage, text overlays, and AI-assisted script generation, all without leaving the browser. The fact that it ships bundled into the free Workspace tier makes it a rare zero-cost option for basic video creation, even if Google has done little to advertise its existence.

Google buried a whole video editor in Drive and barely told anyone. That's very on-brand for a company that ships tools like a magician hiding cards in a sleeve. Vids is free, runs in the browser, and leans on AI to generate scripts and suggest stock footage, so it's aimed at people who need a quick explainer or a slideshow, not editors cutting a short film.

I think the interesting part is what it says about Google's strategy. Instead of launching another standalone app that dies in a year, they're folding capabilities into the suite they already have you using. That's smart, even if discoverability is a problem. I'd want to know how long Google plans to keep it free and how the AI features hold up with real projects, because the demos always look smoother than the actual timeline.

For most people this is a handy fallback. It won't replace CapCut or Premiere, and it doesn't need to. The question is whether Google gives it enough attention to keep it alive. I hope they do, because a free, browser-based editor that anyone with a Google account can reach is genuinely useful.
