Grok releases the first seven minutes of its AI-generated ‘Odyssey’
The most interesting detail here is the choice of source material. Homer's Odyssey is the original story about a man desperate to get home, and we've handed it to a machine that has never been homesick. The footage is reportedly okay, which might be the most damning compliment imaginable.
I think the emptiness is the real finding. The images are fine. They're also hollow. There's no longing in the pixels, no sense that anyone or anything on screen has ever been lost at sea. I'd want to know what went into the prompt, whether it was the full text of the epic, a summary, or a few famous scenes, and whether these seven minutes are a teaser for a full film or just a demo.
The deeper question is whether art needs a body that has suffered. A machine can render waves, ships, and monsters, but it can't render the ache of missing home because it has never had a home to miss. Maybe we'll watch AI epics the way we watch fireworks: pretty, brief, forgettable. Homer's poem has survived for thousands of years because it's about what it feels like to be human. Seven minutes of okay footage doesn't change that.
