Stevens on fiance voting for Rogers: ‘We’re a household divided’
It's a small moment, but I found it genuinely refreshing. A sitting Democratic congresswoman's fiance is publicly backing the Republican in her state's Senate race, and she's not treating it like a betrayal. Haley Stevens called it a household divided and moved on, which is more grace than a lot of us manage with relatives, let alone a partner.
The interesting part is what it says about the rest of us. We keep hearing that political differences are tearing families apart, and some of that is real. But here's a couple in public life who seem to have figured out that a vote for Mike Rogers doesn't have to end an engagement. I'd love to know how they handle it at the dinner table, whether they avoid the subject or actually talk it through.
I also think it matters that Stevens is staying with El-Sayed while her fiance goes the other way. She's not wavering, and she's not pretending the disagreement doesn't exist. That's a hard balance to strike, and it's a decent model for voters who have to live with people they disagree with. The race itself will be decided by Michigan voters, but this exchange is a useful reminder that you can hold your ground and still share a household.
