Etsy is cracking down on AI slop listings
The detail that sticks with me is Etsy's own admission that buyers can't tell which items involve AI-generated content. That's a credibility problem for a marketplace built on the idea that a human made what you're buying. If the distinction is invisible to shoppers, then the handmade premium starts to erode, and sellers who do the work by hand are the ones left holding the bag.
Etsy has been here before with mass-produced goods and dropshipping, and the response is always a policy update that sounds firm. The interesting question is what "stricter rules" actually means in practice. Disclosure requirements only matter if the platform checks them, and policing AI use is harder than policing a reseller, since the output can be edited and blended with human work.
I'd want to know how Etsy plans to verify claims and what happens to repeat offenders. No marketplace has solved this cleanly yet, but naming the problem is at least a start.
