Bessent mocks Obama outside Cheesecake Factory in DC
I have to admit, the image of a Treasury secretary trading restaurant-chain insults with a former president outside an actual Cheesecake Factory is a little absurd. But it's also a pretty clear sign of how unserious political discourse has become. Obama's original jab was mild, the kind of thing politicians say to get a laugh. Bessent's response, though, was more pointed, dragging in the Obama library's architecture.
What interests me is that Bessent chose to go there at all. A Treasury secretary usually has bigger fish to fry, and responding to a joke about drapery or furniture makes the administration look thin-skinned. Then again, Obama started it, and in today's politics, returning fire is almost mandatory.
I'd want to know whether Bessent was speaking off the cuff or if this was a coordinated response. Either way, the whole exchange tells you less about the White House renovations and more about how every interaction between parties now turns into a proxy war.
