AI can make tech CEOs’ lives easier. What about everyone else?

AI can make tech CEOs’ lives easier. What about everyone else?
This piece, drawn from a recent Equity episode, examines why tech CEOs keep sounding tone deaf when they talk about AI. The central observation is that leaders are celebrating AI for making their own jobs easier, while the same technology is being deployed in ways that unsettle the people further down the org chart. The episode argues this messaging gap stems from a deeper asymmetry, executives reap the efficiency gains first, while workers shoulder the retraining, the reshuffling, and the anxiety, a divide that no amount of slick communication can smooth over. The piece suggests that until companies measure AI's impact on non-executive roles honestly, the disconnect will persist because it reflects a real divergence in experience, not just a failure to communicate.

I keep thinking about the irony baked into this one. The same leaders who tout AI as a productivity miracle for themselves are the ones telling employees to embrace change they may not have chosen. When a CEO frames AI as a personal assistant that frees them up for "higher-value work," while simultaneously rolling out tools that might eliminate whole job categories, the dissonance gets hard to ignore.

What connects here is the asymmetry. The Equity discussion points out how these statements read as tone deaf, and I'd argue it's structural. Executives get the upside first, the convenience, the time saved, while the costs, the retraining, the anxiety, the reshuffling of responsibilities, get pushed down the org chart. The technology has upsides, but the way it gets narrated matters. When the messaging comes from someone whose own workflow got easier, it feels less like a shared journey and more like a command.

I'd want to know how many of these companies actually measure the impact on non-executive roles, or whether they're just extrapolating from their own experience. The honest take is that AI can genuinely help everyone, but only if the rollout acknowledges the unequal starting point. Until then, the tone deafness will keep happening, because it's coming from a real divergence in experience, not just bad PR.
