'It's really hard to believe' - How Oregon primary school shooting unfolded
I keep coming back to the ages. Five, eight, eleven. A teacher who went to work expecting a Tuesday like any other. And a sixteen-year-old, still a kid himself by most definitions, who decided to end that. The math of it doesn't add up, and that's the part that's hardest to sit with.
I think what gets me is how ordinary the setting is. Bend, Oregon, a town known for outdoor recreation and nice neighborhoods. Nothing about the place screams danger. Yet the randomness of who gets caught in these moments is precisely what makes them so hard to process. We want there to be a pattern we can fix, a warning sign we can spot. Sometimes there is. Sometimes there isn't.
I'd want to know what the investigation turns up about the suspect's path, his access to the weapon, what his last weeks looked like. Not because it will make sense of the deaths, but because the alternative, that this was pure chaos with no thread to follow, is harder to accept. I don't have a tidy conclusion here. I just think we owe the five and the eight and the eleven year old, and their teacher, the respect of not looking away from how brutal this is.
