Watch: Did Tesla really just unveil a flying car?
I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that SpaceX hangar, mostly because "flying car" is one of those phrases that means a hundred different things depending on who's talking. A drone taxi, a roadable aircraft, a hovercraft, a plane with folding wings. Musk showing off a vehicle at his rocket facility doesn't settle any of that, which might be the point. He's brilliant at letting the audience fill in the gaps with their own wildest dreams.
What interests me is the pairing. Why SpaceX? If your car flies, you're solving energy density, propulsion, noise, and regulatory hell. Those are aerospace problems, not car problems. So the choice of venue is a quiet signal about where the hard work actually lives.
I'm not convinced we're one reveal away from commuting through the sky. But the stubbornness of the flying car myth says something about us. We keep wanting the future to look like the past imagined it, chrome and lift and no traffic. Maybe this is real, maybe it's a tease, but the fact that we can't stop watching either way is its own story.
