Maui Prosecutor to Hire Investigator Focused On Post-Wildfire Contractor Fraud
The Lahaina fire was already a catastrophe, but the aftermath brings its own quiet wounds. Contractor fraud against survivors who lost everything is a sickening echo of the disaster itself, and it says something about our recovery systems that this takes a dedicated investigator to address.
I think the move by Mayor Bissen and the council is overdue, and it's the kind of institutional response we rarely talk about when we tally the costs of climate disasters. We count the acres burned and homes lost, but the financial predation that follows is part of the bill too, and it's paid by the most vulnerable people in the most fragile moment of their lives.
What I'd want to know is how widespread the fraud has been so far, and whether other disaster-prone counties are building this kind of capacity before the next fire, not after. Rebuilding trust in Lahaina is going to take more than permits and insurance checks. It takes making sure the people hired to rebuild are actually helping, and that the state is watching closely enough to catch those who aren't.
