Johnson: GOP will take back House in 2028, ‘finish the job’
Predicting a comeback two years out is cheap, and Johnson knows it. Every party in the minority says the same thing, and sometimes it works. The GOP took back the House in 2022 after losing it in 2018, and Democrats just flipped it back in 2026. Two years is an eternity in politics, so Johnson's confidence reads less like a forecast and more like a promise to his own base that the fight isn't over.
What I'd actually want to know is what happens in between. If the new Democratic majority passes popular legislation and keeps its own extremes on a short leash, the "radical leftist" label won't stick. If it overreaches, Republicans get their opening. The framing matters too, because calling your opponents the most radical leftists in American history sets a high bar for proof, and voters tend to notice when the rhetoric outruns the reality.
I think the honest read is that Johnson is doing his job, rallying the troops while they're down. But the 2028 result will be written by the next two years of governing, not by a speaker's prediction from the losing side of an election.
