Treasury sanctions North Koreans, Russians for alleged IT fraud
Eight North Koreans and two Russians, plus one entity, all accused of running a fraudulent IT scheme that sent money to the North Korean military. That's what the Treasury's sanctions target, and it shows how far the enforcement net has reached into the remote-work economy.
Sanctions make sense as a pressure tool, and cutting off revenue to Pyongyang's military is a legitimate goal. But I wonder about the practical impact. Freezing assets and barring US business with these individuals matters less if they're operating from Russia or elsewhere out of reach. I'd want to know how many US companies fell for the scheme and how the money actually moved.
The broader point is that North Korea has been resilient in finding workarounds, so this may be one more step in a long game rather than a knockout. Still, putting companies on notice to vet remote contractors more carefully is a useful side effect. I'm not ready to call it decisive, but it's a reasonable move worth watching.
