OpenAI working on new $30B raise at $1.25T valuation ahead of IPO
I keep coming back to the sheer size of that number. A private company worth $1.25 trillion is the kind of figure that used to belong to central banks, not startups. But OpenAI is not really a startup anymore, if it ever fully was. It started as a lab with a safety pledge and now defines the ambitions of an entire industry. The $30 billion raise is less about what the company needs and more about who gets to stand on the platform before the IPO window closes.
What's remarkable is the bet underneath all of this. Investors are pricing in a world where intelligence itself becomes the scarce commodity, the thing everyone pays rent on. That makes sense if the current trajectory holds. But the history of AI is full of plateau moments, and I'd want to see the revenue story in plain numbers before signing off on a valuation like this one.
Still, you can see the logic. If reasoning becomes the new electricity, then the company generating it deserves a figure that breaks records. I lean toward thinking this valuation will hold, mostly because there's no real competitor on the same scale right now. The record gets broken today, and history may show it was a floor, not a ceiling.
