Angie Nixon’s ignorance on Cuba shows she isn’t ready for the Senate
I'd want to hear the actual exchange before judging Nixon too harshly, but there's no denying Cuba is one of those issues where Florida Democrats have historically had to walk a careful line. A Senate candidate from a state with a massive Cuban-American community who can't speak coherently about U.S.-Cuba relations is going to get hammered, and Waltz knows that. This is a real vulnerability, not just manufactured spin.
That said, the framing here matters. Being aligned with DSA and holding more progressive views on Cuba is a legitimate political position, not automatically ignorance. Plenty of Democrats have argued for engagement over embargo, and some Cuban-Americans support that view. The question is whether Nixon was articulating a policy disagreement or genuinely fumbling basic facts. Those are two very different stories, and we only have one side's telling so far.
What interests me is the timing. Nixon is early in a primary race, and this kind of attack is designed to define her before she can define herself. Florida Democrats have struggled to compete statewide for years, and a candidate who looks weak on Cuba could hurt the whole ticket. I'd want to know what Nixon actually said, whether she walks it back, and whether this becomes the defining moment of her campaign or just a blip.
