Bipartisan group of senators calls on Trump to 'reverse course' on Russian diesel plan
I keep coming back to the strangeness of six senators, split almost evenly across party lines, signing the same Sunday statement. That kind of bipartisan protest doesn't happen over routine policy disagreements. It happens when something feels procedurally off, when the usual channels were skipped and the people who are supposed to be in the loop find out they weren't.
The statutory requirement part is what catches my attention. The administration apparently skipped a required explanation, which points to a breakdown in the process meant to keep such decisions accountable. And when a deal involves Russian energy, the stakes ripple beyond fuel prices into geopolitics, sanctions coherence, and the signal it sends to allies who've been told Russia's energy sector is off-limits.
I'd want to know what the justification would have been, had it been filed. Was this a strategic hedge, a price play, or something more tangled? The silence from the administration is almost more interesting than the protest itself. I don't have a strong view on whether the deal is wise, but I do think bypassing the legal guardrails invites the exact kind of distrust we're seeing now.
