FTC demands Anthropic leaders testify in consumer harm investigation
Anthropic has spent years positioning itself as the responsible one, the AI lab that built Claude around a constitution and made safety its brand. So the FTC demanding its executives testify is a reminder that even the careful kids get called to the principal's office. The interesting part is what consumer harm actually means for a language model. Hallucinations that pass as facts, advice that sounds confident and is wrong, or the quieter harm of people outsourcing their thinking to a machine that was never really thinking.
I'd want to see the complaints the FTC has collected. If the agency has evidence that Claude misled people in ways that caused real damage, that changes the story from regulation for regulation's sake to something more concrete. Either way, the precedent matters. If the FTC can compel testimony from a company that built its whole identity around safety, no AI lab is off the hook. And that might be the healthiest thing for the field, even if it makes the founders squirm.
