The Fitbit Edge is for folks who don’t want to go totally screenless
The Fitbit Edge now has a name and a place in Google's lineup, slotting between the budget Air and the Pixel Watch 5. That middle position is the interesting part. Google is betting there are enough people who want notifications and step counts without the full smartwatch experience, and honestly that's a bet worth watching. Smartwatch fatigue is real, and the industry has spent years pushing bigger screens and more apps while a lot of users just want a glanceable display and a battery that lasts a week.
What I'd want to know before recommending it is how Google draws the line between the Edge and the Air. If the Edge costs meaningfully more and only adds a slightly nicer screen, the case for it gets thin. The Pixel Watch 5 exists for people who want the full experience, and the Air covers the basics. The Edge has to justify its existence with something concrete, whether that's better sensors, longer battery life, or a price that makes the Air look like a false economy.
I think the tracker makes sense as a concept. The execution is where Google tends to trip up, and the wearable market has seen plenty of mid-tier devices that failed to explain why they should exist.
