Xbox previews two new ways to control cloud games
The phone-as-controller idea is the more interesting of the two to me, because it quietly solves a real pain point. Smart TV cloud gaming has always suffered from a controller shortage, and telling someone to buy a pad or dig out an aging one is exactly the kind of hurdle that kills a casual session. Using the phone they already have in their hand is clever, though I'm curious how the touch controls will map to games designed around analog sticks and triggers. A virtual overlay can get you through a menu, but it rarely survives a racing game intact.
The Nano's direct Wi-Fi connection is the other half of the story, and it's the one with longer legs. Cutting out the console and the middleman latency of a phone relay could make cloud gaming feel snappier on TVs, which is where Microsoft has been pushing hardest. I'd want to see real latency numbers before I get excited, since Wi-Fi direct still has to contend with home network congestion. Both previews are small steps, but they show Microsoft treating cloud input as a first-class problem rather than an afterthought. That's the part worth watching.
