Federal Reserve holds interest rates steady in face of persistent inflation
The 10-2 vote is the detail I keep coming back to. Dissents on the FOMC are rare, and two of them here means the hawks are genuinely worried the Fed is falling behind on inflation. The statement's talk of accumulating more information reads like a committee that wants to buy time without committing to a direction.
I think the hold is defensible as a caution move. Raising rates again while the economy shows mixed signs risks slamming the brakes too hard. But there's a real cost to waiting. Every month the Fed holds steady is another month that elevated prices keep squeezing renters and families on fixed incomes, and the longer inflation stays sticky, the harder it eventually becomes to wring out.
What I'd want to know next is whether the dissenters were pushing for an immediate hike or simply for stronger forward guidance, since that tells you if the real fight is about action or about messaging.
