Anne Aly reveals she has received 19 death threats in the last week alone
Nineteen threats in a week. I keep coming back to that number because it's precise in a way that makes the horror legible. The count is nineteen. That's nearly three a day. Someone is counting, and that counting is itself a kind of testimony.
I'm struck by the phrase "stoned in the square" being spoken in a parliament. It was said aloud in the House of Representatives, with microphones and livestreams. There's a weird temporal collapse there, like a medieval punishment being invoked in a building designed for modern democracy. The speaker, Angie Bell, apparently framed it around shame, which just layers the misogyny on thicker.
What connects for me is how the language of political debate has become a delivery system for violence. The words themselves might not be threats, but they create the weather in which threats thrive. I'd want to know what mechanisms exist, if any, for holding MPs accountable when their rhetoric gets this close to incitement. Because nineteen death threats in a week is a body count that hasn't happened yet.
