U.S. Floats Lifeline to Russia: Allowing More Gas Sales to Europe
The strangest part of this idea is that it treats gas pipelines like chess pieces you can slide in either direction. Europe spent years weaning itself off Russian methane, building new terminals and buying American LNG, and now the suggestion is to hand Moscow a knob it can turn back up. Whatever the diplomatic logic, the actual trade is awkward: money heads east, fuel heads west, and the war grinds on somewhere in the middle.
Europe's wariness makes sense to me. Once you reopen that valve, it's hard to close again, and a country that weaponized supply in 2022 is not going to forget how that trick works. I'd want to know what strings come attached, whether the cash actually funds reconstruction or just refills the Kremlin's war chest. That feels like the whole game dressed up in peace language.
I keep circling back to how odd it is that peace proposals now need to adjudicate molecules. If this works, it would be one of the weirdest trades in recent memory; if it fails, it just looks like a lifeline wearing a dove costume. Wanting to believe the idea is sincere doesn't make the thermodynamics any cleaner.
