Apple CEO says the company doesn’t ‘want to ship AI for AI’s sake’
The interesting part of this defense is that Apple has said a version of it for years, but the pressure to ship something is a lot higher now that Google and OpenAI have made generative AI the default expectation on phones. Waiting until a feature is genuinely useful was the playbook that turned the iPhone into something indispensable, and you can see the same thinking behind keeping Apple Intelligence tightly scoped rather than bolting on a chatbot that answers everything.
At the same time, I wonder how long this posture holds. The market has rewarded speed, and Apple's own earnings calls now name AI as a growth driver. That puts the company in an awkward spot where execs have to talk up their AI plans to Wall Street while publicly telling you they won't chase trends. I would want to know exactly which features they think are worth the wait, because "we'll ship when it's ready" sounds more convincing when you can point to something concrete on the horizon.
I lean toward this being the right call. Apple has the user base and the hardware integration to benefit more from a polished, privacy-consistent take on AI than from being first. The risk is that the gap widens enough for people to feel the absence rather than appreciate the restraint.
