AI agents are coming to Rivianās cars
The timing is telling. Every automaker is racing to bolt generative AI onto their dashboards, but Rivian has been quieter than most, which makes this December reveal worth watching. I'd want to know whether these agents are meant to be a hands-free copilot for the driving itself or more of a smart assistant for the cabin, because those are very different engineering problems with very different safety implications.
Rivian has always leaned on software as a differentiator, and its owners tend to be early adopters who expect more than a glorified voice command system. If the company can tie these agents into the vehicle's own data, like range, charging status, and terrain, that could be genuinely useful rather than a gimmick. The risk is that it becomes another subscription feature nobody asked for.
I'm curious what the "Autonomy" side of that December event actually covers. AI agents and full self-driving are often conflated, and Rivian has been careful not to overpromise on autonomy. That restraint has served them well. I'd like to see them keep it.
