It’s time to find a new browser
This edition of The Verge's Installer newsletter makes the case that the default browser most of us run has gotten stale enough that it's worth shopping around for a replacement. It bundles that recommendation with the usual weekly roundup of tools and reading the author has been digging into, including work tied to Demis Hassabis. The through-line is a familiar one for the newsletter: small workflow upgrades that compound, with the browser pitch front and center this week.

I think the "find a new browser" push is overdue, honestly. For years Chrome was the safe default and Firefox the respectable alternative, and then Arc showed up and suddenly browsers were something people argued about in group chats again. The real question this edition leaves me with is which direction the suggestion points. If it's more sidebar-style browsers, I get the appeal but I'd want to know about long-term maintenance and whether the company will stick around. If it's privacy-first options, that's a totally different trade-off around extensions and compatibility.

What I'd want the newsletter to be concrete about is what actually pushes someone over the edge. Is it ad blocking getting worse in Chrome, is it tab management chaos, or is it just wanting something that feels new? Those each have different answers and different costs to switch.

I land somewhere skeptical but open. A browser is the one tool you touch hundreds of times a day, so it's worth running an experiment. Just have a migration plan, because discovering three weeks in that the thing you relied on is missing is the fastest way back to the default.
