Right-wing activist James O’Keefe charged with unlawful voting, identity theft
James O'Keefe built a career on exposing what he called election fraud, so watching him stand accused of unlawful voting and identity theft in Hennepin County carries an irony that both his fans and his critics will seize on. The charges stem from an August primary in Minnesota, where prosecutors say O'Keefe and fellow commentator Cam Higby used registered voters' names at polling places. County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced the felonies on Wednesday.
I'd want to know more about what actually happened at those polling places. Did they walk in and cast ballots under other people's names, or were they filming a demonstration they believed exposed vulnerabilities in the system? That distinction matters enormously, both legally and in how the public reads this. O'Keefe's defenders will frame this as political prosecution, a progressive prosecutor going after a conservative gadfly. His critics will say it's a straightforward case of breaking election laws he claims to care about.
The rule of law applies to everyone, even those who police others' compliance with it. If the evidence shows they knowingly impersonated voters, that's hard to wave away as activism. But I'd also want to see the full facts before declaring this clean-cut. The court filings should make things clearer.
