Trump: Judge would be held ‘fully responsible’ for anyone hurt on ‘absolutely disgusting’ East Potomac golf course
The "fully responsible" phrasing jumped out at me immediately. That's unusually pointed language for a president to aim at a federal judge, and it reads less like legal argument and more like a personal warning. It's worth remembering that judges are supposed to be insulated from exactly this kind of pressure, and statements like this tend to land on both sides of the political divide depending on who's saying them.
The underlying dispute is genuinely tricky. East Potomac Park is a public space with a long history, and those trees matter to neighbors, environmentalists and wildlife. But the course is also, by most accounts, run-down, and there's a legitimate case that a better facility would serve more people in a city where golf access is uneven. The renovation isn't frivolous on its face.
What I'd want to know next is the legal reasoning behind the injunction, not just the politics. If the judge found real procedural problems with how the tree removal was approved, that's a different story than if she's simply second-guessing a policy choice. The court's full opinion would tell us a lot about whether this is a constitutional clash or a routine administrative dispute that's gotten caught in the political spotlight. Either way, the president's threat to hold a judge personally responsible for injuries on a golf course feels like a bridge too far, even in an era of sharp rhetoric.
