Say Now Aren’t Flirting on New Single, They’re Just ‘Hot and Talking’
I keep thinking about what a strange and lovely choice it is to call an EP "Say What You See" while releasing a single that refuses to say what’s really happening. The whole premise that you can be "hot and talking" without flirting is basically a small-scale study in how we read intention into almost anything. We do this everywhere, not just in pop songs. A held gaze, a leaning posture, a text with one too many smiley faces. We build entire narratives from shadows.
I’d want to hear how the production handles that ambiguity, since PinkPantheress’s touch usually makes uncertainty feel warm instead of anxious. Whether the music leans into the playfulness or keeps a little distance will tell us whether the band actually believes the line between flirting and just talking is even real. My guess is they know it’s mostly made up, and that’s the joke.
For me, the song is a nice reminder that we spend so much energy decoding other people that we forget how rarely anyone is being coded at all. Sometimes a look is just a look. Better data won't solve that mystery. Letting the sun stay warm and not needing to know might get us closer.
