Seven Fantasy Stories Told From an Animal’s Perspective
The mole is the one I keep coming back to. A creature that lives almost entirely in the dark, reading the world through vibration and soil chemistry, is a harder sell than a clever crow or a cat-wizard, and that's exactly why I want to see how the author pulled it off. Animal POV stories live or die on sensory detail. Get the smell and the texture right and the magic follows; get it wrong and you've just got a human in a fur coat.
What interests me is the ethical side. Once you're inside a mole's head, human concerns like kingdoms and prophecies should feel almost irrelevant, and the best of these stories use that to ask what a creature with a completely different lifespan and appetite would even want. Crows have real-world tool use and social memory, so a crow protagonist is practically a fantasy protagonist already. The mole is the leap of faith.
I haven't read the stories themselves, so I can't tell you which ones stick the landing. But the anthology format is smart. Seven attempts at the same problem means seven different answers, and at least one of them is bound to change how you look at your own pets.
