Clive Barker Teases ‘Hellraiser: Revival’ Video Game Has Reignited “Many Ideas” For Film Franchise: “Planning To Keep My Fingers In That Pie”
I've always thought the Hellraiser sequels lost something the moment Barker stepped away, and the franchise has spent decades being propped up by its own mythology. So the idea that a video game, of all things, could hand him back the keys is a strange and welcome reversal. Saber Interactive's Revival apparently did more than sell jump scares, it reminded the man who invented the cenobites why the puzzle box still rattles.
The detail that gets me is the timing. Nearly four decades on, and the engine that drives Hellraiser is still that collision of pain and pleasure, the flesh and the geometry. Barker has always been a horror writer with his eye on transcendence, and a game lets you feel that machinery from the inside. I'd want to know whether Revival's version of the mythos is what sparked him, or whether it's just the jolt of seeing the thing alive again in someone else's hands.
Whatever comes next, I hope he stays true to the weirdness. The franchise has been sanded down into torture porn before, and a grim reboot would be a waste. If Barker is really keeping his fingers in that pie, I want the puzzle box to be a door again, a way into somewhere strange.
