Husted leans into Trump’s compliments on his physique
Trump praising Husted's physique is the kind of detail that would have seemed odd in politics a couple of decades ago, and Husted choosing to answer with a weight room joke tells you something about how this relationship works. The bigger story buried in the quip is the frequency of the visits: three trips to Ohio in a month for one Senate campaign. That's a real investment of presidential time, and it shows where the White House thinks the close races will be.
I'd want to know what Husted's math is here. There's a version of this where attaching himself tightly to Trump helps him in a primary, and another where it complicates a general election in a state that has swung around in recent cycles. Ohio has leaned red lately, but statewide races can still surprise people.
The playful back-and-forth is low stakes by itself. What matters is what it reveals about strategy: Husted is betting that being seen as Trump's guy, down to the shared jokes about his workouts, outweighs any risk. Whether that holds up once the attack ads start running is a question worth watching.
