Where does push to end daylight saving time stand in Congress?
The afternoon daylight argument is the strongest hand the supporters hold. It's easy to forget how much of our waking life happens after five o'clock, and having sunlight for an evening stroll or a youth soccer game beats getting it at six in the morning when most of us are still under the covers. That intuition is why this issue keeps resurfacing every couple of years with genuine bipartisan backing.
But the trade-offs are real, and they rarely get equal airtime. Go to standard time year-round and a January school morning in, say, Michigan or Colorado looks like the middle of the night. Arizona and Hawaii already opted out, so the country is hardly uniform on this now, which makes me wonder how a federal mandate would sit with the states that prefer their own arrangements.
What I'd want to know next is the mechanics. Is this bill sitting in committee, has it attracted co-sponsors from both parties, and is there any scheduled vote? The summary gives me the rationale but not the pulse of the thing, and that's where the political story actually lives.
